Special Tool(s)

Installer, Drive Pinion Oil Seal

Remover, Halfshaft Oil Seal

Removal

  1. Loosen the strut and spring assembly upper mount retaining nuts by five turns.
  1. Raise and support the vehicle. For additional information, refer to Section  100-02 Jacking and Lifting.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Protect the ball joint seal using a soft cloth to prevent damage.
    Remove the lower arm ball joint pinch bolt and nut (wheel and tire is removed for clarity).
    • Discard the retaining nut.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Protect the ball joint seal using a soft cloth to prevent damage.
    Detach the lower arm ball joint from the wheel knuckle (wheel and tire is removed for clarity).
    • Remove the heat shield.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION: Support the halfshaft. The inner joint must not be bent more than 18 degrees. The outer joint must not be bent more than 45 degrees.
    Detach the halfshaft and the intermediate shaft from the transaxle and secure it to one side.
    • Discard the center bearing locknuts.
    • Allow the oil to drain into a suitable container.

  1. Using the special tool, remove the halfshaft oil seal.

Installation

  1. Using the special tool, install the halfshaft oil seal.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Support the halfshaft. The inner joint must not be bent more than 18 degrees. The outer joint must not be bent more than 45 degrees.
    CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Do not damage the halfshaft oil seal.
    Attach the intermediate shaft and the halfshaft to the transaxle.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Support the halfshaft. The inner joint must not be bent more than 18 degrees. The outer joint must not be bent more than 45 degrees.
    CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Do not damage the halfshaft oil seal.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Install new intermediate shaft center bearing locknuts.
    Install the center bearing.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Make sure the heat shield is installed to prevent damage to the ball joint.
    Install the heat shield.

  1. WARNING:
    WARNING:Install a new lower arm ball joint retaining nut. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.
    Attach the lower arm ball joint to the wheel knuckle.
    1. Install the lower arm ball joint.
    1. Install the retaining bolt and nut.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Make sure the heat shield is installed to prevent damage to the ball joint.
    Attach the lower arm ball joint to the wheel knuckle.

  1. Tighten the strut and spring assembly upper mount retaining nuts.
  1. Lower the vehicle.
  1. Check the transaxle fluid level and top up with manual transmission fluid.
