Power Steering Bleeding: Service and Repair
Power Steering System Purging
Purging
1. Park the vehicle on an even surface and apply the parking brake.
2. Raise and support the vehicle until the front wheels are clear of the ground.
3. Disconnect the Crankshaft Position (CKP) sensor.
4. NOTE: When filling the reservoir with power steering fluid, make sure that the fluid is clean and not agitated prior to use. The fluid should be
poured slowly into the reservoir to minimize the possibility of aeration.
Fill the power steering fluid reservoir to the MAX mark with power steering fluid.
5. CAUTION: Do not continuously crank the engine for more than 30 seconds. Failure to follow this instruction may result in damage to the starter
motor.
Turn the ignition switch to the START position. Continue adding fluid to the power steering fluid reservoir until the level remains constant.
6. CAUTION: Do not hold the steering wheel against the lock stops for more than five seconds. Failure to follow this instruction may result in
damage to the power steering pump.
While cranking the engine for 30 seconds, turn the steering wheel from lock to lock.
7. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position. Check the power steering fluid reservoir fluid level and add fluid as necessary.
8. Connect the CKP sensor.
9. Start the engine and allow it to run for several minutes.
10. Turn the steering wheel from lock to lock.
11. Switch OFF the engine and check the power steering reservoir fluid level. Add fluid as necessary.
12. If air is still present bleed the power steering system. For additional information, refer to Power Steering System Bleeding.
13. Lower the vehicle.
