Transmission Control Module (TCM) Initial Learning
NOTICE: Do not raise the Transmission Fluid Temperature (TFT) by stalling the engine, internal transaxle damage will occur.
NOTE: Clear all DTCs first.
NOTE: When installing a new transmission, Transmission Control Module (TCM) or reflashing the TCM, the initialized learned values will need to be
carried out.
NOTE: This procedure cannot be carried out if the transmission fluid is not within the correct temperature specification.
1. With the vehicle in NEUTRAL, position it on a hoist. For additional information, refer to Vehicle Jacking and Lifting.
2. Install the scan tool.
3. Monitor and note the engagement and shift harshness.
4. With the engine idling, monitor the Transmission Fluid Temperature (TFT). The TFT should be between 66°C-110°C (151°F-230°F).
5. With a foot on the brake, move the selector lever to NEUTRAL and hold for 3 seconds. Then move the selector lever to DRIVE and hold for 3
seconds. Carry this out 5 times. Then move the selector lever to PARK.
6. With a foot on the brake, move the selector lever to NEUTRAL and hold for 3 seconds. Then move the selector lever to REVERSE and hold for 3
seconds. Carry this out 5 times. Then move the selector lever to PARK.
7. Drive the vehicle and monitor the scan tool.
8. Drive the vehicle with the throttle opening between 20-25%. Drive until the vehicle reaches 6th gear, not to exceed 80 km/h (50 mph). Then
release the accelerator and coast to a stop within 60 seconds. Carry this out 10 times.
9. If engagements and/or shifts are harsh, repeat Steps 4 through 8 one more time.
Transaxle Control Module (TCM) Reprogramming
TRANSAXLE CONTROL MODULE (TCM) REPROGRAMMING
WARNING: This vehicle is equipped with high voltage cables, components, and wiring. The high voltage warning labels containing the high
voltage symbol are located on each high voltage component. High voltage cables and wiring are orange in color. Certified rubber insulating
gloves and a face shield must be worn when working with the high voltage cables, components, or wiring. The ignition key must be cycled to the
OFF position for a minimum of 5 minutes, and the high voltage traction battery service disconnect plug placed in the servicing/shipping
position before disconnecting the high voltage cables. Do not disconnect, disable, or touch the high voltage cables, components, or wiring during
the module reprogramming procedure because high voltage is present. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury or
death.
Description
NOTE: After the TCM is successfully reprogrammed, clear the continuous diagnostic trouble codes (DTCs) in the powertrain control module (PCM)
and the TCM that may have been stored during reprogramming.
Changes made to the strategy or calibration may require TCM reprogramming. Refer to the Module Programming instructions on the scan tool.
