Description and Operation
Navigation System
From 98.5 MY, a navigation system is available for the Galaxy.
The function of the navigation system is to provide the driver with direction information to a pre‐programmed destination.
The system uses Global Positioning System (GPS) satellites, gyroscopic movement and an ABS wheel sensor signal from the ABS module to track the location of the vehicle against a digital map, in the form of a CD ROM that is inserted into the audio unit.
The audio unit has a colour multifunction display that can be tilted about the horizontal and vertical axes to allow the driver to position it for the best view. The screen is illuminated when the driving lights or parking lights are switched on.
When driving at night it is possible to switch to an automatically controlled night‐time display. The ambient brightness is measured and the screen brightness controlled by means of a photoelectric cell located under the night‐time display button.
If the temperature inside the unit rises, two internal fans are switched on and continue running even after the unit is switched off, until the internal temperature drops below a pre‐determined limit.

CAUTION:

The screen can be cleaned with a soft cloth moistened with alcohol, but solvents such as petrol or turpentine must not be used.

The antenna is mounted at the rear, in the middle of the roof and is designed for GPS and telephone reception. It is used to gather location information from the GPS satellites and has an amplifier incorporated in the antenna base to boost the GPS signal.
The ABS module provides information to the satellite navigation unit to allow the system to determine distance covered. The input to the ABS module is taken from the rear wheels because the front driving wheels experience slip during acceleration and therefore would give inaccurate signals if used.
The system needs to recognise whether the vehicle is going forwards or backwards and the reverse light switch is used to determine the direction, as the ABS wheel sensor signal does not indicate this.
Only the navigation CD ROM should be loaded into the CD ROM drive slot of the audio unit. Audio CDs can only be played with the optional CD autochanger.
Direction information is provided to the driver in the form of a visual instruction on the audio unit LCD display and a verbal instruction over the audio speakers.
Destination information is inputted by the driver using controls on the audio unit that access a menu procedure. This input can only be entered while the vehicle is stationary.
The audio unit and the navigation unit form a unit in a shared double DIN‐sized housing.
Refer to the Navigation System Supplement for Galaxy for full operating instructions.
