40‐007 Test/Deployment Lead – Air Bag
Remove

WARNING:

Wait at least 15 minutes after disconnecting the battery before disconnecting the electronic control module multiplug, for all other supplementary restraint system multiplugs wait two minutes. If these times are not observed there may be the possibility of accidentally deploying the air bag(s) and the pyrotechnic seat belt pretensioners.

WARNING:

Do not use a radio keycode saver when working on the supplementary restraint system (SRS). Make sure that the radio keycode and station presets are noted before disconnecting the battery.

CAUTION:

Disconnect the battery negative lead.

1. Remove the air bag to be deployed (refer to Operation Number 40 700 0 and Operation Number 40 701 0, of the workshop manual).

2. Connect the appropriate adaptor lead from Special Tool 40‐007 to the air bag.
1. Driver air bag.
2. Passenger air bag.
3. Fiesta, Escort, Mondeo, Scorpio and Galaxy driver air bag adaptor leads.
4. Galaxy passenger air bag adaptor lead.
5. Maverick adaptor lead.
6. Probe adaptor lead.
7. Pyrotechnic seat belt pretensioner adaptor lead.

CAUTION:

To protect the adaptor lead connector from damage during deployment, raise the air bag module off the ground on two wooden blocks.

3. Place the air bag module inside a wire cage (e.g. overturned parts container) with the air bag cover facing uppermost.

4. Connect the deployment lead to the adaptor lead.

WARNING:

Before proceeding to step 6 ensure that all personnel working in the vicinity are aware of the fact that a loud noise (bang) is about to occur. Do not let anybody approach the vehicle closer than 6,25 metres.

5. Move as far away from the vehicle as possible, connect the crocodile clips to the battery.

6. Deploy the air bag.
   Depress both switches together.
