PROGRAM FEATURES
Components Covered:
^ Ford-manufactured power rack and pinion steering gear assembly.
^
The TRW power rack and pinion steering gear assembly is not involved in these programs.
^
Coverage is not provided for the repair or replacement of steering gear tie rods, tie rod ends, bellows, and the
power steering pump, fittings, hoses and clamps beyond the new vehicle warranty. These components are not
affected by the internal valve bore wear of the power steering gear housing. The repair of external power
steering system fluid leakage also is not covered.
Repair Coverage:
^ Ford will pay the replacement cost (parts and labor) of the Ford-manufactured power rack and pinion steering gear
assembly when required as a result of internal valve bore wear of the power steering gear housing within five years
from the vehicle in-service date or 50,000 miles of operation, whichever comes first.
Reimbursement:
^ Owners will be reimbursed for prior Ford-manufactured power rack and pinion steering gear assembly
replacement/repair costs incurred within five years from their vehicle's in-service date or 50,000 miles of operation,
whichever comes first.

Reimbursement will include the deductible amount owners may have paid under Ford's Major Components Coverage (applicable only to
Continental), Ford's Extended Service Plan (ESP) or any similar plan in effect on their vehicles.

Owners are to request reimbursement from dealerships by May, 31, 1984. Dealerships must submit owner reimbursement requests on separate
warranty claim Forms 1863, either mailed or through the Direct Warranty Entry System, by July 31, 1984.

TECHNlCAL INSTRUCTiONS
Note:
The following involved vehicles must be inspected to determine if they are equipped with a Ford or TRW-manufactured power rack and pinion
steering gear assembly. For these vehicles, proceed to the inspection procedure shown below.

1978-model Fairmont, Zephyr

1982 and 1983-model Fairmont, Zephyr (police/fleet units only)

1979 through 1982-model Mustang, Capri
All other involved vehicles are equipped with a Ford-manufactured power rack and pinion steering gear assembly and do not require inspection. For
these vehicles, first confirm with the owners that their vehicles exhibit a temporary reduction in power steering assist when first started cold, and that full
power steering assist is restored once their vehicles are warmed-up. If you confirm the existence of the condition, proceed to the repair procedure.
Inspection
1.
With the vehicle on the ground, look at the underside of the vehicle rearward of the front bumper and visually inspect the power rack and pinion
steering gear assembly. If the housing is a one-piece die cast aluminum design, the vehicle is equipped with a Ford-manufactured steering gear
assembly. In these instances, proceed to the following repair procedure. If the vehicle is not equipped with a Ford-manufactured power rack and
pinion steering gear assembly i.e., is equipped with a TRW assembly), it is not included in Owner Notification Programs M24 and M25.
