The SRS was developed to provide additional protection for the driver and front passenger against serious facial and upper chest injuries in the event of a severe collision. Full protection of the occupants can only be provided in conjunction with the seatbelts.

The SRS consists of the following components:

  • Airbag module
  • Driver's airbag with one ignition stage
  • Passenger airbag
  • Side air bags
  • Belt tensioners in the belt retractors for driver and passenger
  • Clock spring
  • Side airbag sensor
  • Airbag warning lamp
  • Warning lamp, passenger airbag deactivated
  • Key-operated passenger airbag deactivation switch

Airbag module

Mark showing installation orientation

The airbag module is located in the centre of the vehicle above the centre tunnel and in front of the gear lever. Here the incoming signals from the sensors are processed. The installation orientation is shown by a mark on the housing.

A crash sensor is integrated into the airbag module, and this measures the acceleration/deceleration which occurs in an accident.

If the deceleration caused by a collision exceeds a certain value, the airbag module compares this data with values stored in the module and deploys the corresponding airbags and the belt tensioners.

The airbag module supplies the airbags with a back-up voltage which ensures that the airbag(s) can be triggered for at least 150 ms after the impact even if the on-board power supply fails.

The airbags are deployed with an AC signal.

Once the module has deployed it must be replaced.

Securing holes

The side airbags are inconspicuously integrated into the backrests of the seats. A label is sewn onto the outside of the relevant backrest if a side airbag is fitted.

When a side airbag is deployed, the seam on the seat cushion tears open, allowing the airbag to escape unhindered from the backrest of the front seat. Each side airbag has a volume of around 15 litres.

Seatbelt labelling

Homologation identification

In order to ensure that the driver's side and passenger side seatbelt retractors cannot be mixed up, the driver's side seatbelt has a black homologation identification and the passenger side one an orange identification.

The seatbelt on the driver's side is shorter and has a stiffer/harder fabric.

Seatbelt tensioners and belt force limiters on the driver's side and the passenger side

On the Streetka the seatbelt tensioners and belt force limiters are integrated in the seatbelt retractor on both the driver's side and the passenger side.

Spindle

The spindle is designed as a torsion bar and by turning reduces the pulling power of the belt in the event of a severe impact.

The spindle can twist up to 6 times depending on the force acting on it.

The seatbelt retractor must be removed and a new one installed following a deployment.

Deactivation of the passenger airbag

Key-operated switch

-
Warning lamp, passenger airbag deactivated

The key-operated switch for deactivation of the airbag is located on the passenger side. The warning lamp to indicate deactivation of the passenger airbag is located in the instrument cluster.

The key-operated switch is turned with the ignition key to activate or deactivate the passenger airbag.

When the passenger airbag is deactivated the passenger airbag deactivation warning lamp comes on.

If when the passenger airbag is deactivated the vehicle is involved in an impact, then the side airbag and the seatbelt tensioner on the passenger side are deployed. However, this does not represent a hazard for a child in a rearward facing child safety seat on the passenger seat.
