IDLE - ROUGH, PERFORMANCE POOR - COLD ENGINE OPERATION (2.3L WITH CARBURETOR)

FORD 1984 LTD

CALIBRATIONS: All

A few 1984 LTD's were built with an electrical circuit missing in the 14290 wiring harness. Rough idle/poor performance on cold engine driveaway can
be serviced by installing a jumper wire harness in the carburetor choke circuit.

Procedure:

1.

Locate the choke control relay assembly mounted under the hood on the right hand fender apron in front of the voltage regulator.

2.

If the relay connector contains (4) four wires, no further action is required. However, if the relay connector contains only (2) or (3) wires, continue
with the following steps.

A/C Vehicles

Both circuits #36 and #4 of the jumper wire must be used.

1.

Remove connector from voltage regulator.

2.

Remove circuits #36 (yellow/white dot) and #4 (white/black stripe) from voltage regulator connector. (Circuit #4 has two wires on one terminal.)

NOTE:

Mark connector to identify removed circuits.

3.

Remove empty connector from jumper wire and insert the terminals removed from the voltage regulator connector, making sure they match the
circuits of the mating connector on the jumper wire. Install connector to jumper wire.

4.

Remove the tie down tape retaining the terminals for circuit #36 to the jumper wire, both places.

5.

Insert the terminals of circuit #36 and #4 (closest to connector) on jumper wire into the corresponding cavities vacated on the voltage regulator
connector.

6.

Reinstall voltage regulator connector.

7.

Route jumper wire along the (14290) wire harness to choke relay.
