For the 1984 model year, passenger cars equipped with a C-3, C-5, or AOD model transmission and an auxiliary cooler will have an auxiliary bypass
fitting or "H" fitting. The "H" fitting allows transmission fluid to bypass the auxiliary cooler to avoid excessive cooling of the transmission fluid when
ambient conditions drop to
-
20 ~F or lower.
Cleaning Procedure - Cooler Line and Cooler for Vehicles Equipped with an Auxiliary Cooler and "H" Bypass Fitting
Visually check the cooler lines in the area of the auxiliary cooler in-line. If an "H" bypass fitting is present, follow the procedure outlined below flushing
the cooler lines and coolers.
REMEMBER:
The flushing of the cooler lines and coolers is mandatory after any transmission service that generates contamination. This must be done to avoid repeat
services.
1.
Set up the torque converter and cooler cleaner (Rotunda Model No. 014-00028 or equivalent) according to the instructions supplied with the
equipment.
2.
Flush the cooler lines and cooler according to the equipment instructions. This should involve connecting an inlet hose from the cleaner to the
transmission cooler-out line (at the transmission) and connecting the cleaner return hose to the transmission cooler-in line. Place the end of the
return hose in the reservoir of the cleaner. Do not reconnect the cooler lines at the transmission.
