The internal parts of each hydraulic valve lifter assembly are a matched set. If these are mixed, improper valve operation may result. Therefore,
disassemble, inspect and test each assembly separately to prevent mixing the parts. Fig. 7 illustrates one type of hydraulic lifter used. On some late
model V8-302 engines, a roller type hydraulic lifter is used instead of the conventional lifter.

Remove intake manifold and related parts.

Remove rocker arm covers.
3.
Loosen rocker arm stud nuts or bolts and rotate rocker arms to the side.

Lift out pushrods, keeping them in sequence in a rack so they may be installed in their original location. On some late model V8-302 engines
with roller type lifters, pushrods have a collar at upper end and can only be installed one way.
5.
On V8-302 engines with roller type lifters, remove lifter guide retainer attaching bolts, then the guide retainer and guide plates. Ensure guide
retainer and plates are marked so they may be installed in their original location.
6.
On all models, remove valve lifters, using a magnet rod, and place them in sequence in a rack so they may be installed in their original location.
7.
Reverse procedure to install.
