Clean the transaxle exterior with solvent before disassembly. | | -
Clean all removed parts (except sealed bearings) and all sealing surfaces with solvent, and dry with compressed air. | | -
WARNING:Using compressed air can cause dirt and other particles to fly out, causing injury to the eyes. Wear protective eye wear whenever using compressed air. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury. Clean out all holes and passages with compressed air and verify that there are no obstructions. | | -
Using the special tool, mount the transaxle to a bench. | | -
Remove the clutch release fork and bearing. - Remove the boot.
- Remove the clutch release fork and bearing.

Remove the park/neutral position (PNP) switch. | | -
Remove the bolt and the vehicle speed sensor (VSS). | | -
Rotate the transaxle 180 degrees. | | -
Remove the reversing lamp switch. | | -
Remove the clutch slave cylinder line bracket. - Remove the bolts.
- Remove the clutch slave cylinder line bracket.

Shift the transaxle into first gear. | | -
Remove the case cover. - Remove the bolts.
- Remove the case cover.

CAUTION:Do not reuse locknuts. Remove the input and output shaft locknuts and discard. - Using the special tool, keep the input shaft from turning.
- Remove the input and output shaft locknuts and discard.

Remove the reverse synchronizer blocking ring retainer assembly. - Remove the spacer.
- Remove the reverse synchronizer blocking ring retainer assembly.

CAUTION:The synchronizer blocking rings are not interchangeable. Make sure to keep them in the order that they were removed. Remove the reverse synchronizer blocking ring. | | -
Remove and discard the reverse/fifth shift fork roll pin. | | -
Remove the reverse/fifth shift fork and synchronizer hub assembly. | | -
Remove the synchronizer blocking ring. | | -
Remove the fifth speed cluster gear. | | -
Remove the fifth gear bushing. | | -
Remove the fifth gear spacer and fifth speed gear. - Remove the fifth gear spacer.
- Remove the fifth speed gear.

Remove the reverse idler shaft lock bolt and shift rail guide bolt. | | -
Remove the bolt, spring, and ball. | | -
Separate the transaxle case. - Remove the 15 transaxle case bolts.
- Separate the transaxle case.

Remove the reverse idler gear. - Remove the reverse idler gear shaft.
- Remove the reverse idler gear.

Remove the shift gate bolt. | | -
Remove the shift control shaft and shift gate. - Remove the shift control shaft.
- Remove the shift gate.

Remove the shift lever shaft roll pin. | | -
Remove the shift lever shaft and shift fork selector lever. - Remove the shift lever shaft.
- Remove the shift fork selector lever.

Shift into second and fourth gears. | | -
WARNING:When removing the gear shifter fork and main shift control shaft assembly the detent ball will fly out. Hold a shop towel over the detent ball and spring to prevent the ball from becoming airborne. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury. Remove the gear shifter fork and main shift control shaft assembly, detent ball and spring. | | -
Remove the output and input shafts as an assembly. | | -
NOTE:Flywheel housing side shown, transaxle case side similar. Remove the input shaft bearing cups. | | -
Using the special tools, remove the input shaft seal. | | -
NOTE:Flywheel housing side shown, transaxle case side similar. Remove the output shaft bearing cups. | | -
Remove the shift control selector plate and spacer. - Remove the bolts.
- Remove the shift control selector plate and spacer.

Remove the shift control shaft selector lever. - Remove the bolt.
- Remove the shift control shaft selector lever.
| | -
Remove and discard the roll pin. | | -
Remove the shift control shaft assembly. | | -
Using the special tool, remove the shift control shaft seal. | | -
Remove the vent tube. - Remove the bolts.
- Remove the vent tube.

NOTE:Flywheel housing side shown, transaxle case side similar. Using the special tools, remove the differential bearing cups. | | -
Remove and discard the reverse lever roll pin. | | -
Remove the reverse lever shaft. - Remove the reverse lever shaft.
- Remove the reverse lever.

NOTE:Transaxle case side shown, flywheel housing side similar. Using the special tool, remove the halfshaft seals. | | |
