Removal

  1. Disconnect the battery ground lead. For additional information, refer to Section  414-01 Battery, Mounting and Cables.
  1. Remove the cylinder head cover.
    For additional information, refer to Cylinder head cover - in this section.

  1. Remove the spark plugs with the special tool.
  1. Remove the accessory drive belt. For additional information, refer to Section  303-05 Accessory Drive.
  1. Raise the vehicle. For additional information, refer to Section  100-02 Jacking and Lifting.

  1. Turn the crankshaft counter-clockwise until piston no. 1 is approx. 45 degrees before top dead center (TDC).

  1. Remove the timing cover lower plug

  1. Remove the cylinder block lower blanking plug and install the special tool.
  1. Lower the vehicle.

  1. Remove the timing cover upper plug.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Ensure that the timing chain tensioner is released to release the timing chain.
    Release the timing chain.
    1. Release the timing chain tensioner pawl using a suitable screwdriver.
    1. Turn the exhaust camshaft in the normal direction of rotation at the hexagon using an open-ended spanner in order to release the timing chain tensioner.
    1. Insert a M6 x 25 mm bolt through the threaded hole of the timing cover upper plug in order to fasten the timing chain guard in the released position.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Counterhold the camshafts at the hexagon using an open-ended spanner to prevent the camshafts from rotating.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Secure the timing chain and camshaft sprockets with a suitable wire in order to prevent them from falling into the engine front cover.
    Unscrew the camshaft sprocket bolts.
    • Detach the exhaust camshaft sprocket and timing chain from the exhaust camshaft.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Place the camshaft bearing caps, camshafts and camshaft sprockets aside in the appropriate sequence for reinstallation.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Loosen each of the camshaft bearing cap bolts by two turns in sequence.
    Remove the camshaft bearing caps in the sequence indicated.
  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Secure the timing chain and camshaft sprockets with a suitable wire in order to prevent them from falling into the engine front cover.
    Detach the intake camshaft sprocket from the intake camshaft.

Installation

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Do not tighten the camshaft sprocket bolt for the moment.
    Attach the intake camshaft sprocket with the timing chain to the intake camshaft and insert the intake camshaft.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Install the camshafts so that the cams for cylinder no. 4 are at valve overlap position.
    CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Install the camshafts and camshaft bearing caps in their original installation position.
    Install the camshafts.
    • Tighten the camshaft bearing cap bolts evenly in stages of half a turn each in the sequence indicated.
    • Tighten the bolts in two stages.
    • Stage 1: 7 Nm
    • Stage 2: 16 Nm

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Do not tighten the camshaft sprocket bolts for the moment.
    Attach the exhaust camshaft sprocket with the timing chain to the exhaust camshaft.

  1. Install the special tool.
  1. Coat the timing cover upper plug with sealer.

  1. Tension the timing chain.
    • Remove the bolt from the chain guide and install the timing cover upper plug.
  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Only turn the crankshaft in the normal direction of rotation.
    Turn the crankshaft until no. 1 piston is at TDC.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Counterhold the camshafts at the hexagon using an open-ended spanner to prevent the camshafts from rotating.
    Tighten the camshaft sprocket bolts.

  1. Remove the special tool.
  1. Raise the vehicle. For additional information, refer to Section  100-02 Jacking and Lifting.

  1. Remove the special tool.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Only turn the crankshaft in the normal direction of rotation.
    Turn the crankshaft until piston no. 1 is approx. 45 degrees before TDC.

  1. Install the special tool.
  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Only turn the crankshaft in the normal direction of rotation.
    Turn the crankshaft until no. 1 piston is at TDC.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Tighten M6 x 18 mm bolt hand-tight only.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:If the M6 x 18 mm bolt cannot be installed, correct the valve timing.
    Check the position of the crankshaft pulley with an M6 x 18 mm bolt.
  1. Lower the vehicle.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:If the special tool cannot be fitted, correct the valve timing.
    Check the position of the camshafts using the special tool.

  1. Remove the special tool.
  1. Raise the vehicle. For additional information, refer to Section  100-02 Jacking and Lifting.

  1. Remove the special tool.

  1. Screw in the cylinder block lower blanking plug.
  1. Coat the timing cover lower plug with sealer.

  1. Install the timing cover lower plug.
  1. Install the auxiliary drive belt. For additional information, refer to Section  303-05 Accessory Drive.

  1. Install the spark plugs using the special tool.
  1. Install the cylinder head cover.
    For additional information, refer to Cylinder head cover - in this section.
  1. Connect the battery ground lead. For additional information, refer to Section  414-01 Battery, Mounting and Cables.
  1. Initialize the window winder motors. For additional information, refer to Section  501-11 Glass, Frames and Mechanisms.
