Removal

All vehicles
  1. WARNING:
    WARNING:Do not smoke or carry lighted tobacco or open flame of any type when working on or near any fuel related components. Highly flammable mixtures are always present and may ignite. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.
    Remove the right-hand rear road wheel. For additional information, refer to Section  204-04 Wheels and Tires.
4-door and 5-door
  1. Remove the fuel tank.
    For additional information, refer to Fuel Tank in this section.
Wagon
  1. Drain the fuel tank. For additional information, refer to Section  310-00 Fuel System - General Information.
All vehicles

  1. Remove the fender splash shield.

  1. Remove the fuel tank filler pipe upper retaining bolt.
    • Detach the ground wire from the fuel tank filler pipe upper retaining bolt.
4-door and 5-door

  1. Using a suitable transmission jack and suitable wooden blocks, support the rear crossmember.

  1. Detach the rear crossmember (two bolts each side).
  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Do not place excessive strain on the brake hoses.
    Partially lower the rear crossmember.
Wagon

  1. Disconnect the fuel tank filler pipe from the fuel tank.
All vehicles

  1. Remove the fuel tank filler pipe retaining bolts and remove the fuel tank filler pipe.

Installation

All vehicles

  1. WARNING:
    WARNING:Do not smoke or carry lighted tobacco or open flame of any type when working on or near any fuel related components. Highly flammable mixtures are always present and may ignite. Failure to follow these instructions may result in personal injury.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:Inspect the fuel tank filler pipe seal inside the fuel tank for damage. Install a new fuel tank if the seal is damaged.
    Install the fuel tank filler pipe and install the fuel tank filler pipe retaining bolts.
Wagon

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Lubricate the fuel tank filler pipe bottom end to aid installation and make sure that the fuel tank filler pipe seal in the fuel tank is not damaged during installation of the fuel tank filler pipe.
    Using a suitable petroleum jelly lubricate the fuel tank filler pipe before inserting it into the fuel tank.
4-door and 5-door
  1. Raise the rear crossmember.

  1. Using the special tool, align the crossmember.
    1. Insert the alignment pins through the crossmember alignment holes.
    1. Slide the locking plates into the groove and tighten the alignment pin sleeve.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Final tightening of the rear suspension components should be carried out when the vehicle weight is on the road wheels.
    Install the rear crossmember bolts.
    • Remove the transmission jack.
All vehicles

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Make sure that the ground wire is attached when installing the fuel tank filler pipe upper retaining bolt.
    Install the fuel tank filler pipe upper retaining bolt.

  1. Install the fender splash shield.
  1. Install the right-hand rear road wheel. For additional information, refer to Section  204-04 Wheels and Tires.
4-door and 5-door
  1. Install the fuel tank.
    For additional information, refer to Fuel Tank in this section.
