Removal and Installation

Special Tool(s)

Separator, Ball Joint

Removal

  1. Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to Section  414-01 Battery, Mounting and Cables.
  1. Remove the right-hand front wheel and tire. For additional information, refer to Section  204-04 Wheels and Tires.

  1. Remove the splash shield.

  1. Detach the accessory drive belt (tensioner shown from above for clarity).
    1. Rotate the accessory drive belt tensioner clockwise.
    1. Detach the accessory drive belt from the generator pulley.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Leave the tie-rod end retaining nut in place to protect the ball joint stud.
    Loosen the tie-rod end retaining nut.

  1. Using the special tool, detach the tie-rod end from the wheel knuckle.
    • Remove and discard the tie-rod end retaining nut.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Use a 5mm Allen key to prevent the ball joint from rotating.
    Detach the stabilizer bar connecting link from the suspension strut.

  1. Remove the engine rear support insulator to subframe bolt (exhaust system shown removed for clarity).
  1. Remove the catalytic convertor heatshield retaining nut and bolts.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Move the bottom of the engine toward the front of the vehicle.
    Detach the catalytic convertor heatshield.
    1. Slide the heatshield sideways toward the transmission.
    1. Slide the heatshield down.

  1. Disconnect the generator electrical connectors.

  1. Detach the generator from the engine.

  1. Detach the generator wiring harness from the top of the generator.

  1. Remove the generator through the wheelhousing.

Installation

  1. WARNING:
    WARNING:Install a new tie-rod end retaining nut. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.
    CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Make sure the generator electrical connectors and wiring harnesses are installed in the correct orientation and are not touching the heatshields. Failure to follow this instruction may result in damage to the electrical connectors and wiring harnesses.
    CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Loosely install the generator retaining bolts before tightening them.
    To install, reverse the removal procedure.
    • Tighten the generator retaining bolts in the sequence shown.
  1. Initialize the door window motors. For additional information, refer to Section  501-11 Glass, Frames and Mechanisms.
