Inspection and Checking

NOTE:
NOTE:The generic electronic module (GEM) forms part of the central junction box (CJB).
NOTE:
NOTE:If the generic electronic module (GEM) is changed, the new one must be reinitialised. For this purpose, the vehicle-specific data is read out of the module to be replaced using WDS and is transferred to the new module. REFER to:
Kommunikations-Netzwerk (418-00, Diagnosis and Testing),
Zentralelektrikmodul (GEM) (419-10, Diagnosis and Testing).
NOTE:
NOTE:Before reading out the vehicle-specific data, remake all the electrical connections to the module to be removed, so that communication between the module and WDS is ensured.
  1. Verify the customer concern.
  1. Visually inspect for obvious signs of electrical damage.

  • Vehicles with conventional headlamps: socket C901, pin 5, circuit 15-LE19 (GN/BU), BJB side and ground.
  • Vehicles with gas discharge headlamps: socket C901, pin 5, circuit 30-LE19 (RD), BJB side and ground.

Is battery voltage measured?
Yes
No
- Vehicles with conventional headlamps: LOCATE and RECTIFY the break in the circuit between fuse F88 (CJB) and the dipped beam relay using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.
- vehicles with gas discharge headlamps: LOCATE and REPAIR the break in the circuit using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.
A3: CHECK THE CONTROL CIRCUIT OF THE DIPPED BEAM RELAY

Measure the voltage between the dipped beam relay, socket C901, pin 2, circuit 15S-LE19 (GN/BU), BJB side and ground.

Is battery voltage measured?
Yes
No
- Vehicles built up to 8/2002 GO to A10.
- Vehicles built from 8/2002 GO to A11.
A4: CHECK THE GROUND CONNECTION OF THE DIPPED BEAM RELAY

Measure the resistance between the dipped beam relay, socket C901, pin 1, circuit 31-LE19 (BK), BJB side and ground.

Is a resistance of less than 2 Ohms registered?
Yes
No
LOCATE and RECTIFY the break in the circuit between the dipped beam relay and soldered connection S315 using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.
A5: CHECK THE DIPPED BEAM RELAY

Use a fused test cable to bridge the dipped beam relay, socket C901, pin 3, circuit(s) 15S-LE23A (GN/WH)/ 15S-LE16A (GN/OG), and pin 5, circuit 15-LE19 (GN/BU), BJB side.
  • Vehicles with conventional headlamps: Fuse rating 15 A.
  • Vehicles with gas discharge headlamps: Fuse rating 40 A.

Does the dipped beam illuminate?
Yes
RENEW the dipped beam relay. CHECK the operation of the system.
No

No
A7: CHECK FUSE F88 (15 A) (CJB).

Disconnect Fuse F88 (15 A) (CJB).

CHECK Fuse F88 (15 A) (CJB).

Is the fuse OK.?
Yes

RENEW fuse F88 (15 A) (CJB). CHECK the operation of the system. If the fuse blows again, LOCATE and RECTIFY the short to ground using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.

LOCATE AND RECTIFY the break in the voltage supply of fuse F88 (15 A) (CJB) using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system. If necessary RENEW the CJB. CHECK the operation of the system.
A9: CHECK FOR OPEN CIRCUIT IN 15-LE21(A) (GN/BK)

Disconnect Central junction box (CJB) from connector C500.

Measure the resistance between the CJB, connector C500, pin 7, circuit(s) 15-LE21 (GN/BK)/15-LE19 (GN/BU), wiring harness side and the headlight switch, connector C478, pin 8, circuit(s) 15-LE21A (GN/BK)/15-LE10 (GN/OG), wiring harness side.

Is a resistance of less than 2 Ohms registered?
Yes
RENEW the CJB. CHECK the operation of the system.
No
LOCATE and RECTIFY the break in circuit 15-LE21(A) (GN/BK), between the CJB and the headlight switch using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.
A10: CHECK CIRCUIT 15S-LE19 FOR OPEN CIRCUIT

Ignition switch in position 0.

Disconnect Central junction box (CJB) from connector C509.

Measure the resistance between the CJB, connector C509, pin 8, circuit(s) 15S-LE19 (GN/BU), 15S-KA22 (GN/BU), wiring harness side and the dipped beam relay, socket C901, pin 2, circuit 15S-LE19 (GN/BU), BJB side.

Is a resistance of less than 2 Ohms registered?
Yes
Check fuse F95 (CJB) If the fuse is OK, CHECK and if necessary RENEW the CJB. CHECK the operation of the system.
No
LOCATE and RECTIFY the break in circuit 15S-LE19 (GN/BU), between the CJB and the dipped beam relay using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.
A11: CHECK FUSE F95 (7.5 A) (CJB).

Disconnect Fuse F95 (7.5 A) (CJB).

CHECK Fuse F95 (7.5 A) (CJB).

Is the fuse OK.?
Yes
No
RENEW fuse F95 (7.5 A) (CJB). CHECK the operation of the system. If the fuse blows again, LOCATE and RECTIFY the short to ground using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.

Measure the voltage between fuse F95 (7.5 A) (CJB) and ground.

LOCATE and RECTIFY the break in circuit 15S-LE19 (GN/BU), between the fuse F95 (7.5 A) (CJB) and the dipped beam relay using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system. If the concern persists, CHECK and if necessary RENEW the CJB. CHECK the operation of the system.

Measure the voltage between the CJB, connector C501, pin 4, circuit 15S-LE6 (GN/YE), wiring harness side and ground.

RENEW the CJB. CHECK the operation of the system.
No
LOCATE and RECTIFY the break in the circuit between the CJB and the headlight switch using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.
A14: CHECK FUSE F84 (20 A) (CJB).

Disconnect Fuse F84 (20 A) (CJB).

CHECK Fuse F84 (20 A) (CJB).

Is the fuse OK.?
Yes
No
RENEW fuse F84 (20 A) (CJB). CHECK the operation of the system. If the fuse blows again, LOCATE and RECTIFY the short using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.

Is a resistance of less than 2 Ohms registered?
Yes
No
LOCATE and RECTIFY the break in the circuit between the CJB and the headlight switch using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.
A17: CHECK THE CJB

Measure the resistance at the CJB, connector C501, between pin 8, circuit 15S-LE1 (GN/YE) and pin 4, circuit 15S-LE6 (GN/YE), CJB side.

Is a resistance of less than 2 Ohms registered?
Yes
RENEW the headlight switch. CHECK the operation of the system.
No
RENEW the CJB. CHECK the operation of the system.
A18: CHECK THE HEADLIGHT SWITCH

PINPOINT TEST B : DAYTIME RUNNING LAMPS SWITCHED ON WITH THE IGNITION SWITCHED OFF (PARKING LIGHTS SWITCHED OFF)

- Headlamp, RHS: LOCATE and RECTIFY the short to battery voltage in the circuit between fuse F18 (BJB) and the right-hand headlight using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.

B2: CHECK THE CAUSE OF THE FAULT

Disconnect Dipped beam relay from socket C901.

Connect fuse F16 (BJB).

LOCATE and RECTIFY the short to battery voltage in circuits 15S-LE16A (GN/OG) or 15S-LE23A (GN/WH) which are connected to the dipped beam relay, pin 3 using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.
No
B3: CHECK THE DIPPED BEAM RELAY

Measure the resistance at the dipped beam relay, socket C901, between pin 3 and pin 5, component side.

Is a resistance of less than 2 Ohms registered?
Yes
RENEW the dipped beam relay. CHECK the operation of the system.
No
B4: CHECK THE OPERATION OF THE HEADLIGHT SWITCH

Disconnect Headlight switch from connector C478.

Check the headlight switch according to the component tests at the end of this subsection:
  • Check the headlight switch connector C478 at pins 4, 6, 11, 12, 13, 15 and 16.

Is the switch OK?
Yes
No
RENEW the headlight switch. CHECK the operation of the system.
B5: NARROW DOWN THE FAULT CONDITION

Disconnect Central junction box from connector C500.

B6: CHECK CIRCUIT 15S-LE19 (GN/BU) FOR SHORT TO BATTERY VOLTAGE

Measure the voltage at the headlight switch, connector C478, between pin 6, circuit(s) 15S-LE19 (GN/BU) and 15S-LE10 (GN/OG) up to 08/2002, wiring harness side and ground.

LOCATE and RECTIFY the short to battery voltage in the circuits connected to connector C478, pin 6 using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.

Is a resistance of less than 2 Ohms registered?
Yes
No
LOCATE and RECTIFY the break in the circuit between the CJB and the headlight switch using the Wiring Diagrams. CHECK the operation of the system.
C3: CHECK THE HEADLIGHT SWITCH

Check the headlight switch according to the component tests at the end of this subsection:
  • Test the headlight switch connector C478 at pins 4, 8, 13 and 15.

Is the headlight switch OK?
Yes
RENEW the CJB. CHECK the operation of the system.
No
RENEW the headlight switch. CHECK the operation of the system.
