Assure that the EGR valve is operating per Section 29-15 of the Car/Truck Engine/Emission Diagnosis Manual.

If corrections are made, test vehicle to determine if detonation is eliminated. If not, continue with Step #5.
NOTE:
A trace of detonation during heavy road loads is acceptable.

Retard the timing in 2~ increments, up to a maximum of 6~ from the engine specification on the emission decal. Each time initial timing is
retarded, the engine curb and fast idle speeds must be readjusted to the specification indicated on the Emission Control Information decal.
Obtain an Authorized Modifications decal and list the date, dealer number and summary of alterations performed. Select a prominent place adjacent to
the Vehicle Emission Control Information decal suitable for installing the Authorized Modifications decal. Clean the area, install the decal and cover it
with a clear plastic decal shield.
