Radio - Ignition Noise/Alternator Whine

RADIO - IGNITION NOISE/ALTERNATOR WHINE - TAPE MODE

FORD 1985-86 MUSTANG

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1985-86 CAPRI

Ignition noise or alternator whine coming through the radio while in the tape mode may be caused by the ground location of the speed control module.
The noises may also be noticeable in the AM or FM mode at low volume. To correct this, relocate the ground wire for the speed control module using
the following procedure:

1.

Locate the speed control module under the left side of the instrument panel.

CAUTION:

DO NOT CUT the black wire with a white stripe in the connector.

There are two connectors on the top of the speed control module. Locate the solid black ground wire in the left hand connector, (Figure 2). Cut this
wire approximately two inches from the connector. Splice in approximately 15 inches of #18 gauge stranded wire to the portion of the cut wire still
connected to the speed control module.

3.

Attach an eyelet terminal to the opposite end of the spliced in wire.

4.

Remove the L.H. cowl kick panel trim piece. Drill an attaching hole in the L.H. cowl kick panel sheet metal. Be sure there is nothing behind the
panel in the area where the hole is drilled. Use a sheet metal screw to attach the eyelet terminal to the kick panel.

5.

Route the added wire so that it cannot be kicked or otherwise damaged.

6.

Reinstall the kick panel trim piece.
