Drive belt squeal on vehicles built prior to September 25, 1985 which are equipped with 3.8L engines may be caused by the belt tensioning idler pulley
being out of alignment, causing the belt to run on the rear vertical surface of the idler pulley (Figure 2).
This condition can be serviced by replacing the belt tensioner pulley and bracket. Tighten the drive belt to specification outlined in Section 27-02-8 of
the 1985 Car Shop Manual D.
