Some 1985 AOD passenger car applications will have an inverted 3-4 accumulator piston design. The inverted piston has a pocket in the piston (Figure
13).
Because of the new design, the disassembly instructions for the 3-4 accumulator in Section 17-20-12 of the 1985 Car Shop Manual, Volume D are
incomplete. The "note" in the 3-4 Accumulator Removal Procedure (currently Step 9) should read:
"Depending on model application, one of three accumulator designs will be present: (1) there will be a spring between the cover and piston as pictured,
(2) there will be a spring beneath the piston, or (3) there will be no spring. The appearance of the piston and spring will also vary from model to model."
