CHILD IN A REAR-FACING CHILD RESTRAINT INSTALLED IN THE FRONT SEAT CAN BE BADLY INJURED BY THE PASSENGER
AIR BAG IF IT INFLATES. NEVER USE A REAR-FACING CHILD RESTRAINT IN THE FRONT SEAT. IF A FORWARD-FACING CHILD
RESTRAINT IS SUITABLE FOR YOUR CHILD, ALWAYS MOVE THE PASSENGER SEAT AS FAR BACK AS POSSIBLE. ATTACH BELT
TO BUCKLE. TIGHTEN BELT. FOR MORE INFORMATION, SEE YOUR OWNER GUIDE AND THE INSTRUCTIONS THAT CAME WITH
YOUR CHILD RESTRAINT.
The two locking modes of the retractors are vehicle-sensitive (emergency) locking mode and automatic locking mode.
Emergency locking mode allows the webbing to move in or out freely, except during vehicle hard braking, hard cornering or impacts of approximately
8 km/h (5 mph) or more. The retractor can be made to lock by pulling on the belt.
The dual locking mode retractor on the shoulder belt portion of the combination lap I shoulder safety belt for front seat passenger (coupe) and rear
seat outboard passenger (coupe and convertible) operates in two ways:
In the emergency locking mode, the shoulder belt retractor will allow the occupant freedom of movement, locking tight only on hard braking, hard
cornering or impacts of approximately 8 km/h (5 mph) or more. The front and rear outboard seat belt retractors can also be made to lock by
pulling/jerking on the belt.
In the automatic locking mode, the shoulder belt retractor will be automatically locked and remain locked when the combination lap I shoulder safety
belt is buckled and does not allow the occupant freedom of movement. This mode provides a tight lap/shoulder belt fit on occupant and child safety
seat or infant carrier installation restraint.
WARNING: REAR-FACING INFANT SEATS SHOULD NEVER BE PLACED IN THE FRONT SEAT.
The automatic locking mode must be used when installing a child safety seat on the front passenger seat and rear outboard seats where dual locking
retractors are provided.
To switch the retractor from the emergency locking mode to the automatic locking mode, perform the following steps:
1. Buckle the lap/shoulder combination belt.
2. Grasp the shoulder portion of the belt and pull downward until all of the belt is extracted. When allowed to retract, a clicking sound will be heard.
At this time, the belt retractor is in the automatic locking mode (child restraint mode).
NOTE: When the combination lap/shoulder belt is unbuck led and allowed to retract completely, the retractor will switch back to the vehicle
sensitive (emergency) locking mode.
A clicking sound will continue to be heard as the belt is allowed to retract. This indicates that the retractor is in the "automatic locking mode".
