Neutral Safety Switch: Service and Repair
C4 & C5 TRANSMISSIONS
Removal
1.
Remove downshift linkage rod from transmission downshift lever.
2.
Remove downshift outer lever retaining nut and lever.
3.
Remove two switch attaching bolts.
4.
Disconnect wire connector and remove switch.

Installation
1.
Install switch on transmission and replace attaching bolts.
2.
With transmission manual lever in neutral, rotate switch and install gauge pin (No. 43 drill) into gauge pin hole, Fig. 3.
3.
Tighten switch attaching bolts and remove gauge pin...
4.
Install outer downshift lever and attaching nut.
5.
Install downshift linkage rod to downshift lever.
6.
Install switch wire connector and check operation of switch. The engine should start only with lever in NEUTRAL or PARK.
AOD & C3 TRANSMISSIONS
1.
Place selector lever in the manual LOW position.
2.
Disconnect battery ground cable.
3.
Raise and support vehicle.
4.
Disconnect neutral safety switch electrical connector.
5.
Using Neutral Start Switch Socket T74P-77247-A or equivalent, and a ratchet, remove neutral start switch and O-ring.
6.
Reverse procedure to install. Torque switch to 8-11 ft. lbs.
