Brake Rotor/Disc: Service and Repair
Front

REMOVAL 

1. Raise and support vehicle, then remove wheel and tire assembly from rotor mounting face.

CAUTION:  Use care to avoid damage or interference with caliper bleeder screw fitting and brake rotor shield.

2. Remove caliper anchor bracket bolts. Position caliper aside and support with suitable wire to avoid damaging caliper and hose.

CAUTION:  Use care to prevent deformation of rotor and nicking, scratching or contaminating brake lining and rotor surfaces.

3. Remove front rotor from hub assembly by pulling it off hub studs, noting the following:

a. If excessive force is necessary to remove rotor, inspect rotor for lateral runout prior to installation.
b. If additional force is required to remove front disc brake rotor, apply suitable rust penetrant and inhibitor on front and rear rotor/hub mating

surfaces.

c. Strike rotor between studs with plastic hammer. If rotor still will not come off, install three-jaw puller D80L-1013-A, or equivalent, and

remove rotor.

INSTALLATION 

CAUTION:  Failure to clean rust and foreign material from rotor and hub mounting surfaces when installing new or old rotors will result in high rotor
lateral runout, which will speed up the development of brake roughness, shudder or vibration.

1. If front disc brake rotor is being replaced, remove protective coating from new rotor with suitable brake cleaner.
2. If original rotor is being installed, ensure rotor braking and mounting surfaces are clean.
3. Apply suitable lubricant to pilot diameter of front disc brake rotor, then install rotor on wheel hub assembly.
4. Install caliper.
5. Install wheel and tire assembly.

CAUTION:  Failure to tighten wheel hub bolt nuts with torque wrench in star pattern may result in high rotor runout, which will speed
development of brake roughness, shudder and vibration.

6. Lower vehicle, then pump brake pedal to position brake linings prior to moving vehicle.
7. Road test vehicle.
