Mustang V8-4.6L DOHC (1996)
Ignition Lock: Service and Repair
1. Turn ignition switch to RUN position.
2. Using a 1/8 inch drift, press lock cylinder pin through access hole and remove ignition switch.
3. Remove blue plastic steering column upper bearing retainer by inserting suitable screwdriver or similar tool, with 90 degree bend on tip, between
steering column upper bearing retainer and steering column lock housing bearing, and prying upward.
4. Insert tip of screwdriver into double-D slot of steering column lock housing bearing, then rotate 90°. Remove steering column lock housing
bearing, then steering column lock gear. Note relationship of steering column lock gear to position of rack teeth.
5. Position steering column lock gear in base of lock cylinder housing as noted previously. Last tooth on steering column lock gear should be meshed
with last tooth on rack.
6. Position steering column upper bearing retainer into lock cylinder housing by inserting tip of screwdriver into double-D slot of lock housing
bearing, then rotating 90°.
7. Press blue plastic steering column upper bearing retainer into lock cylinder housing. Ensure steering column upper bearing retainer is in its
original position.
8. Line up flats of steering column lock gear with flats of washer by pulling down on steering column lock cam.
9. Install ignition switch assembly, then check for proper starting. Ensure steering column tube is locked in LOCK position.
