Steering Gear: Service and Repair
Removal and Installation
1. Disconnect battery ground cable, then turn ignition switch to RUN position.
2. Raise and support vehicle, then position drain pan to catch fluid from power steering lines.
3. Remove flexible coupling to power steering gear input shaft and control bolt.
4. Remove two front wheel spindle connecting end cotter pins and nuts, then separate studs from spindle arms using tie rod end remover tool
3290-D, or equivalent.
5. Remove two steering gear to crossmember nuts, insulator washers and bolts.
6. Remove front rubber insulators, then position steering gear to allow access to hydraulic lines.
7. Disconnect hydraulic lines, then remove steering gear.
8. Reverse procedure to install, noting following:
a. Ensure all rubber insulators are pushed completely inside steering gear housing before installing bolts.
b. Fill power steering system with specified steering fluid.
c. If front wheel spindle connecting rod or ends were loosened, check and adjust front end alignment.
NOTE: Hydraulic lines are designed to swivel when properly tightened. Do not attempt to eliminate looseness by overtightening fittings, or
plastic seals may be damaged.
