Valve Guide Seal: Service and Repair
REMOVAL
1. Remove valve covers (6582) and rocker arms (6564).
2. Remove spark plug (12405) from the applicable cylinder.
3. Position piston (6108) at the top of its stroke with both valves closed.
NOTE: Failure of air pressure to hold the valves closed while performing the following steps is an indication of valve and/or valve seat damage
and requires removal of cylinder head (6049).
4. Install an air line with an adapter in the spark plug hole and turn on air supply.
5. Install Valve Spring Compressor T93P-6565-A under exhaust camshaft and on top of exhaust valve spring retainer (6514).
6. Install Valve Spring Compressor T93P-6565-A under intake camshaft and on top of primary intake valve spring retainer.
7. Install Valve Spring Compressor T93P-6565-A under intake camshaft and on top of secondary intake valve spring retainer.
8. Compress valve spring retainer.
9. Remove valve spring retainer key (6518), valve spring retainer and valve spring (6513).
CAUTION: If air pressure has forced the piston to the bottom of the cylinder, any loss of air pressure will allow the valves to fall into the
cylinder. A rubber band or string wrapped around the end of the valve stem will prevent this from happening and still allow enough travel to check
the valve for binds and excessive guide- to-valve stem clearance.
10. Using locking pliers, remove valve stem seal (6571).
11. Repeat Steps 2 through 10 until all necessary valve stem seals are removed. Discard all removed valve stem seals.
INSTALLATION
CAUTION: If air pressure has forced the piston to the bottom of the cylinder, any loss of air pressure will allow the valves to fall into the
cylinder. A rubber band or string wrapped around the end of the valve stem will prevent this from happening and still allow enough travel to check
the valve for binds and excessive guide-to-valve stem clearance.
