Flywheel: Component Tests and General Diagnostics

INSPECT

Inspect the flywheel for cracks or other damage that would make it unfit for further service.

Inspect the flywheel ring gear for worn, chipped or cracked teeth. If the teeth are damaged, replace the ring gear and flywheel.

FLYWHEEL RUNOUT 

NOTE: Minor surface repairs can be made by cleaning with emery cloth.

1. Remove spark plugs (12405) to ease rotating the flywheel (6375).
2. Install the Dial Indicator with Bracketry TOOL-4201-C, or equivalent, so that the indicator point contacts the flywheel face.

NOTE:  Make sure to push the flywheel toward the engine and hold it in that full forward position so that crankshaft end play will not be indicated
as flywheel runout.

2. Set indicator dial on zero mark. Turn flywheel one complete revolution while observing total indicator runout reading.
3. If clutch face runout exceeds specification, remove flywheel and check for:

Burrs between flywheel and face of crankshaft mounting flange.

Runout of crankshaft mounting flange.

4. Replace flywheel or machine crankshaft flywheel mounting face sufficiently to true-up the surface.
