Mustang GT V8-4.6L SOHC VIN X (1998)
Oil Pick Up/Strainer: Service and Repair
REMOVAL
1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Remove engine compartment brace from front fender aprons and dash panel.
3. Raise vehicle on hoist.
4. Drain engine oil.
5. Remove the front sub-frame crossmember reinforcement retaining bolts and the front sub-frame crossmember reinforcement.
NOTE: The convertible option uses a larger front sub-frame crossmember reinforcement that is retained with 14 bolts.
6. Remove motor mount to front sub-frame crossover nuts.
7. Remove transmission housing cover.
8. Raise engine approximately 100 mm (4 inches) using safety stand and wood block positioned under the crankshaft pulley.
9. Insert wood blocks 60-70 mm (2.5-2.75 inches) under each front engine support insulator.
10. Remove oil pan retaining bolts.
11. Removal oil pan.
NOTE: It may be necessary to adjust to engine elevation several times to obtain clearance for oil pan removal.
INSTALLATION
1. Clean oil pan. Inspect for damage and replace as required.
2. Clean sealing surfaces of engine front cover, crankshaft rear oil seal and retainer and cylinder block.
3. Inspect oil pump screen cover and tube and O-ring and replace if required.
4. If removed, position oil pump screen cover and tube on oil pump and hand-start two bolts.
5. Install bolt retaining oil pump screen cover and tube to main bearing stud spacer hand-tight.
6. Tighten oil pump screen cover and tube-to-oil pump bolts to 8-12 Nm (71-106 in. lbs.). Tighten oil pump screen cover and tube-to-main bearing
stud spacer bolt to 20-30 Nm (15-22 ft. lbs.).
7. Position safety stand and wood block under crankshaft pulley and raise engine approximately 100 mm (4 inches).
8. Position oil pan gasket and oil pan as an assembly to cylinder block.
