Battery: Service and Repair
Cleaning and Inspection
Battery Cleaning
Keep the battery top clean and dry to reduce the need for service and extend battery life. Also make certain the cable clamps are tightly fastened to the
battery posts. If corrosion is found, disconnect the cables and clean clamps and posts with a wire brush. Neutralize the corrosion with a solution of
baking soda and water. After installing cables, apply a small quantity of Premium Long-Life Grease XG-1-C or XG-1-K or equivalent meeting Ford
specification ESA-M1C75-B to each battery post to help prevent corrosion.
Water Addition
The Motorcraft maintenance-tree battery normally does not require additional water during its life. However, for severe service usage or in high
temperature climates the electrolyte level should be checked at least every 24 months or 24,000 miles (40,000 km). If the electrolyte level is below the
level indicator in any cell, add enough pure water to bring the level up to the indicator. Never add electrolyte ("battery acid") to the battery as this could
shorten battery life.
