Power Steering Pump: Service and Repair
Start Up Procedure After Power Steering Pump or Gear Service
After engine start up, follow these steps to eliminate excessive steering system noise due to air trapped in the system during service:
1. Disconnect the ignition coil wire and raise front wheels off floor.
2. Fill the power steering pump reservoir with MERCON Multi-Purpose (ATF) Transmission Fluid XT-2-QDX or equivalent.
3. Crank the engine with the starter motor and add MERCON Multi-Purpose (ATF) Transmission Fluid XT-2-QDX or equivalent until the level
remains constant.
4. While cranking the engine, rotate the steering wheel from lock-to-lock.
NOTE: Front wheels must be off the floor during lock-to-lock rotation of the steering wheel.
5. Check the fluid level and add MERCON Multi-Purpose (ATF) Transmission Fluid XT-2-QDX or equivalent if necessary.
6. Connect the ignition coil wire.
7. Start the engine and allow it to run for several minutes.
8. Rotate steering wheel from lock-to-lock.
9. Turn off the engine and check the fluid level. Add PERSONA Multi-Purpose (ATF) Transmission Fluid XT-2-QDX or equivalent if necessary.
10. If air is still present, purge system of air.
