Steering Gear: Service and Repair
Flushing
Cleaning
1. Use a clean workbench and tools.
2. Clean exterior of the power rack and pinion steering gear with solvent. If necessary, drain off excessive hydraulic fluid.
3. Handle the parts carefully to avoid nicks, burrs, scratches and dirt. Do not use solvents on seals.
Flushing
Always flush the power rack and pinion steering gear when replacing the power steering pump due to fluid contamination.
1. Remove the power steering pump and power steering pump pulley and service the power steering pump as required.
2. Install the power steering pump pulley on the serviced power steering pump. Install the power steering pump. Flush the power steering pressure
hose before installing.
NOTE: Connect only the power steering pressure hose.
3. Place the power steering return hose from the power rack and pinion steering gear in a container and plug the power steering reservoir pump hose.
4. Fill the power steering pump reservoir with MERCON Multi-Purpose (ATF) Transmission Fluid XT-2-QDX or equivalent.
5. Disconnect ignition coil wire and raise the front wheels off the around.
6. While adding approximately 1.9 liters (0.5 gallon) of MERCON Multi-Purpose (ATF) Transmission Fluid XT-2-QDX or equivalent turn the
ignition switch to the START position and crank the engine with the starter motor while turning the steering wheel from left to right.
7. When all the fluid has been added, turn ignition switch to the OFF position and connect ignition coil wire.
8. Remove the plug from the power steering reservoir pump hose and connect the power steering reservoir pump hose to the power steering oil
reservoir.
9. Check the fluid level. Add MERCON Multi-Purpose (ATF) Transmission Fluid XT-2-QDX or equivalent if necessary. Do not overfill the
reservoir.
10. Lower the vehicle.
11. Turn the steering wheel from lock-to-lock without hitting the stops to expel any trapped air.
