Clutch Cable: Service and Repair
CAUTION: Whenever the clutch release lever cable is disconnected for any reason, such as transmission removal, clutch pedal components or clutch
release lever cable replacement, it is imperative the proper method for installing the clutch release lever cable be followed. Improper installation may
damage components or cause system failure.
REMOVAL
1. CAUTION: Do not allow quadrant to snap rearward or personal injury may occur.
Lift the clutch pedal to its most upward position to disengage the clutch pedal quadrant adjuster pawl from the clutch release lever cable. Push the
clutch pedal adjuster quadrant assembly forward, unhook the clutch release lever cable from the clutch release lever cable and allow it to slowly
swing rearward.
2. Open the hood. Remove the screws retaining cable assembly insulator to the dash panel.
3. On vehicles equipped with 4.6L engine, remove the screw from the clutch release lever cable to the brake master cylinder.
4. Pull the clutch release lever cable through the dash panel and into the engine compartment. Remove cable bracket screw from fender apron.
5. Raise the vehicle on a hoist.
6. On vehicles equipped with 4.6L engine, remove the clutch release lever cable retaining screw from the crossmember.
7. Remove the clutch release lever dust shield from the clutch housing.
8. Remove the C-clip retaining clutch release lever cable assembly to the clutch housing.
9. Slide the ball on the end of the clutch release lever cable through the hole in the clutch release lever and remove the clutch release lever cable.
INSTALLATION
CAUTION: The clutch pedal must be lifted to disengage the adjusting mechanism during clutch release lever cable installation. Failure to do so will
result in damage to the self-adjuster mechanism.
Under no circumstances should a prying instrument such as a screwdriver or a pry bar be used to install the clutch release lever cable into the clutch
release lever or clutch release lever cable.
1. NOTE: On vehicles equipped with 4.6L engine, make sure the clutch release lever cable is routed between the power steering pressure hose and
the engine.
Install the clutch release lever cable in vehicle to establish clutch release lever cable routing.
2. NOTE: Route clutch release lever cable between engine oil pan and crossmember under the engine mount.
Insert the clutch release lever cable through the hole in the clutch housing and through the hole in the clutch release lever. Slide the ball on the end
of the clutch release lever cable into cable ball pocket on clutch release lever.
3. Install the C-clip to retain the clutch release lever cable to the clutch housing.
4. On vehicles equipped with 4.6L engine, install clutch release lever cable retaining screw to the crossmember. Tighten to 7-9 Nm (62-79 inch lbs.).
5. Install cable bracket screw in fender apron. Tighten to 8-12 Nm (71-106 inch lbs.).
6. Lower vehicle.
7. Push the clutch release lever cable as an assembly into the hole in the dash panel and secure the insulator with screws. Tighten to 3.4-4.8 Nm
(30-42 inch lbs.).
8. On vehicles equipped with 4.6L engine, install clutch release lever cable retaining screw to brake master cylinder. Tighten to 7-9 Nm (62-79 inch
lbs.).
9. Install the clutch release lever cable as an assembly by lifting the clutch pedal to disengage the clutch pedal quadrant adjuster pawl from the clutch
pedal adjuster quadrant. Then, while pushing the clutch pedal adjuster quadrant forward, hook the end of the clutch release lever cable over the
rear of the clutch pedal adjuster quadrant.
10. Raise vehicle. See that the ball of the clutch release lever cable is still seated in the ball pocket of the clutch release lever.
11. Install the clutch release lever dust shield on the clutch housing. Lower vehicle.
12. Press clutch pedal several times to seat the clutch release lever cable and lift up on the clutch pedal to complete the adjustment.
