Mustang GT V8-4.6L SOHC VIN X (1998)
6. Push flanged end of axle shaft toward center of vehicle and remove u-washer from button end of axle shaft.
7. Remove axle shaft from rear axle housing. Do not damage inner wheel bearing oil seal.
INSTALLATION
1. CAUTION: Do not let axle shaft splines damage inner wheel bearing oil seal or rear wheel bearing assembly.
NOTE: Check for presence of rear axle shaft o-ring on spline end of axle shaft and install if missing.
Carefully slide axle shaft into rear axle housing without damaging rear wheel bearing or inner wheel bearing oil seal assembly. Start splines into
differential side gear and push firmly until button end of axle shaft can be seen in differential case.
2. Install the u-washer on button end of the axle shaft splines. Then push axle shaft outboard until shaft splines engage and u-washer seats in the
counterbore of differential side gear.
Rear Axle Removal
3. CAUTION: Differential pinion shaft lock pin must be tightened to specification using Stud and Bearing Mount EOAZ-19554-BA or equivalent
meeting Ford specification WSK-M2G349-Al.
Position differential pinion shaft through differential case and differential pinion gears, aligning the hole in differential pinion shaft with
differential pinion shaft lock pin hole. Install differential pinion shaft lock pin and tighten to 20-41 Nm (15-30 ft. lbs.).
