Shift Interlock Switch: Description and Operation
A shift interlock mechanism is used on vehicles with an automatic transmission. This is to prevent shifting the automatic transmission out of the PARK
position unless the brake pedal is applied.
The system consists of:

an actuator attached to the key interlock assembly.

necessary wiring.
The shiftlock actuator is energized when the ignition switch is turned to the RUN position, locking the gearshift lever in the PARK position.
When the brake pedal is pressed and the Brake Pedal Position (BPP) switch is activated, the shiftlock actuator is deactivated and the gearshift lever
can be movedout of the PARK position.
