ISSUE:
Aluminum road wheels that are hard to remove from the vehicle may be caused by galvanic corrosion between the wheel and hub. This
condition is more likely to develop in areas that use large amounts of salt.
ACTION:
To correct this and prevent future corrosion build-up, clean the mating surfaces and apply a lubricant. Refer to the following service
procedure for detailed information.
NOTE:
VEHICLES BUILT AFTER 6/30/88 WILL HAVE AN ALUMINUM WHEEL WITH A NEW DESIGN CENTER BORE. THE NEW
WHEELS DO NOT REQUIRE THE APPLICATION OF LUBRICANT TO PREVENT CORROSION.
1.
Remove the four (4) wheel and tire assemblies.
2.
Using a wire brush, steel wool or other suitable material, remove the corrosion from the front hubs, rear axle flanges and wheel center bore.
3.
Coat the wheel center bore with disc brake caliper lubricant (D7AZ-19590-A). This is a high temperature lubricant with excellent corrosion
resistance.
NOTE:
DO NOT ALLOW LUBRICANT IN THE WHEEL LUG NUT SEATS OR ON THE WHEEL STUDS.
4.
Reinstall the wheels on the vehicle.
