ISSUE:
A no start condition due to a low state of battery charge may be caused by low current output from the alternator. This can occur on vehicles
operated under frequent stop and start driving conditions in high ambient temperatures coupled with high electrical loads.
ACTION:
Install a new pulley and belt kit that consists of a new alternator pulley, crankshaft pulley, accessory drive belt, lower timing belt cover and
lower timing belt cover gasket. The new pulley and belt kit will increase the alternator speed and current output at lower engine RPM. Refer
to the following procedure for service details.
NOTE:
PERFORM ALL BATTERY TESTS AS OUTLINED IN THE PROBE SHOP MANUAL, SECTION 31-02 TO MAKE SURE THE
BATTERY IS AT A FULL STATE OF CHARGE BEFORE RELEASING THE VEHICLE TO THE CUSTOMER.
1.
Disconnect the battery.
2.
Remove the A/C accessory drive belt.
3.
Remove the alternator accessory drive belt.
4.
Remove the alternator adjustment bolt.
5.
Raise the vehicle on a hoist and remove the right hand splash shield.
6.
Remove the crankshaft pulley from the engine.
7.
Remove the lower timing belt cover and gasket.
8.
Install the new timing belt cover and gasket supplied in the kit.
9.
Install the crankshaft pulley supplied in the kit.
10.
Disconnect the right hand tie rod end to allow enough room for the alternator to be removed.
11.
Disconnect the alternator wiring and remove the alternator from the vehicle.
12.
Remove the alternator pulley from the alternator.
13.
Install the new alternator pulley supplied in the kit on the alternator.
14.
Reinstall the alternator in the vehicle.
15.
Connect the alternator wiring.
16.
Reconnect the right hand tie rod end.
17.
Reinstall the inner splash shield and lower the vehicle.
18.
Loosely install the alternator adjustment bolt.
19.
Install and adjust the A/C accessory drive belt and the new alternator accessory drive supplied with the kit.
20.
Reconnect the battery.
