This TSB article is being republished in its entirety to update the model year and revise the procedure.
ISSUE:
Harsh shift and/or harsh engagement may occur on some vehicles. This would be accompanied by Diagnostic Trouble Code (DTC) 628 or PO741 and
possibly a flashing Transmission Control Indicator Lamp (TCIL). Proper diagnostic procedures are necessary to avoid repeat repairs.
ACTION:
Diagnose and repair the shifting concern. Refer to the following Diagnostic and Service Procedure for details.
DIAGNOSTIC AND SERVICE PROCEDURE
1.
Connect the New Generation Star (NGS) Tester and retrieve and record all DTCs.
2.
Clear all codes from vehicle memory and proceed to Step 3.
3.
Diagnose and repair any codes other than Torque Converter Clutch (TCC) system performance (DTC 628 or PO741) or transmission
over-temperature (DTC 657 or P1783). Pay close attention to Turbine Shaft Speed (TSS) sensor or Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) related codes.
4.
Using NGS in diagnostic data link mode, monitor the following Parameter Identification Display (PID):

PID for Turbine Speed Sensor: TSS
^
PID for engine rpm: RPM
NOTE:
1995 PROBES BUILT FROM 12/6/94 THROUGH 3/16/95 WILL REQUIRE TSB ARTICLE 95-11-4 TO BE PERFORMED IN ORDER TO
RECEIVE PID DATA THROUGH NGS.
NOTE:
FOR THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURE, DO NOT ATTACH THE TSS SENSOR LEAD OF THE TESTER TO THE TRANSAXLE. PLACE THE
TRANSMISSION TESTER IN BENCH MODE. THE VEHICLE MUST BE PARKED AND ENGINE OFF TO PERFORM BENCH MODE
TESTING.
5.
Connect the Transmission Tester with the CD4E Cable/Overlay.
6.
Depress TCC activate button. Does the status light turn green?

Yes Proceed to Step 7.
^
No - Check connection and retest. If light still does not activate, replace Solenoid Body (-7G391-). Road test the vehicle to verify repair.
7.
Prepare for the test drive by switching the Transmission Tester to Drive mode.
NOTE:
DO NOT CYCLE THE "O/D CANCEL" OR "ECONOMY/SPORT" SWITCHES DURING THE FOLLOWING PROCEDURE.
