Crankshaft Position Sensor: Description and Operation
Crankshaft Position Sensor #1
Crankshaft Position Sensor
PURPOSE
The Crankshaft Position Sensor No.1
(CKP1) determines engine speed for fuel injection timing, ignition timing, and emission control.
OPERATION
A six-vane rotor is mounted to the distributor shaft and rotates at camshaft speed. As the rotor passes through a magnetic Hall Effect pickup
switch, the sensor creates six evenly (60° intervals) spaced signals for each distributor rotation. vanes are detected and sent to the Powertrain
Control Module
(PCM) in a pulse wave form.
