| Description and Operation The front suspension consists of two McPherson strut type suspension units and a crossmember, attached to which are the lower arms and the stabilizer bar. The lower arm is of a pressed steel, fabricated construction which is attached to the crossmember by two bolts through a horizontal front bushing and a vertical rear bushing. In order to achieve wider vehicle tracking the Ford Racing Puma lower arm have been extended. The standard Ford puma lower arms are therefore not suitable for this vehicle. The wheel knuckle also mounts the suspension unit and tie rod end. The pressed steel, fabricated crossmember ensures sturdy front axle geometry. The crossmember is bolted in seven places to the floor pan. The crossmember carries the lower arms, the stabilizer bar, the power steering gear and the rear roll restrictor. The stabilizer bar is 16 mm diameter and consists of a transverse bar with two ball jointed connecting links. The suspension unit is supported at its upper mounting by a rubber insulator fitted to the strut top mount. A coil spring is located between two seats on the suspension unit. A plastic boot is fitted around the piston rod to prevent dirt and water ingress. A rubber bump stop is also fitted to protect the suspension unit at its fully compressed condition. NOTE:In order to achieve wider vehicle tracking the Ford Racing Puma knuckles have been changed. The standard Ford Puma knuckles are therefore not suitable for this vehicle. The lower arm also carries a ball joint that attaches the lower arm to the wheel knuckle. |
