General Equipment
12 volt battery
WARNING:
WARNING:To minimize the possibility of injury in the event of premature deployment, always carry a live air bag module with the bag and trim cover pointed away from the body. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.
WARNING:
WARNING:To minimize the possibility of premature deployment, live air bag modules must only be placed on work benches which have been ground bonded. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.

  1. Before using the SST (49 H066 002), inspect its operation.

  1. WARNING:
WARNING:Do not use a malfunctioning SST (49 H066 002), otherwise it could cause the air bag module or pre-tensioner seat belt to accidentally operate (deploy).
    CAUTION:
CAUTION:Because the permissible voltage for the SST (49 H066 002) is 12 V, do not connect a 24 V power source because it will damage the SST. Always connect only a 12 V power source.
Follow the steps below to inspect the SST (49 H066 002).
    Step Inspection procedure Light condition
1 Connect the power supply red clip to the positive battery terminal, and the black clip to the negative battery terminal. On Off
2 Connect connectors A and B. Off On
3 Press the activation switch. On Off
    • If not as indicated in the table, replace the SST (49 H066 002) because it has a malfunction.
  1. Turn the engine switch to the LOCK position.
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable and wait for 1 min or more.
For additional information, refer to: Battery (414-01 Battery, Mounting and Cables, Removal and Installation).
  1. Remove the applicable air bag module or pre-tensioner seat belt to be deployed. For additional information, refer to the relevant procedure(s) in this section.
  1. Follow the procedure below for operating (deploying) the applicable air bag module or pre-tensioner seat belt.

  1. Connect the test lead to the air bag module and the adapter (driver air bag module shown).

  1. CAUTION:
CAUTION:To protect the test lead electrical connector(s) from damage during deployment, raise the air bag module off the ground on two wooden blocks.
Place the air bag module inside a suitable rigid wire cage with the air bag module cover uppermost.

  1. Connect the deployment lead to the adapter.

  1. WARNING:
WARNING:Before proceeding make sure that all personnel in the vicinity are aware that a loud noise (bang) is about to occur. Do not let anybody approach closer than six meters. Failure to follow this instruction may result in personal injury.
Move as far away as possible from the air bag module and connect the deployment lead to the battery.

  1. WARNING:
WARNING:Pouring water on the deployed air bag module and pre-tensioner seat belt is dangerous. The water will mix with the residual gases to form a gas that can make breathing difficult. Do not pour water on the deployed air bag module and pre-tensioner seat belt.
    CAUTION:
CAUTION:The air bag module should not be handled immediately following deployment as the air bag module will be very hot.
    CAUTION:
CAUTION:After deployment, the air bag module surface may contain deposits of sodium hydroxide, a product of the gas generate combustion, that is irritating to the skin. Use protective gloves when handling any deployed air bag module.
Press the activation switch on the SST (Deployment tool) to operate (deploy) the applicable air bag module or pre-tensioner seat belt.
  1. Disconnect the SST (Deployment tool) from the SST (Adapter harness).
  1. Deployed air bag module(s) should be sealed in a suitable bag and then disposed of in accordance with local contaminated waste regulations.
