LIGHT TRUCK:
1998 RANGER
ISSUE:
The power window may only travel 25-137 mm (1-5") downward when the one-touchdown mode is activated on some vehicles. This may be due to the
calibration of the Generic Electronic Module (GEM).
ACTION:
Remove the GEM and replace with a revised GEM. Refer to the Service Procedure for details.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
NOTE:
WHEN THE BATTERY HAS BEEN DISCONNECTED AND RECONNECTED, SOME ABNORMAL DRIVE SYMPTOMS MAY OCCUR
WHILE THE POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE (PCM) RELEARNS ITS ADAPTIVE STRATEGY. THE VEHICLE MAY NEED TO BE
DRIVEN 16 KM (10 MILES) OR MORE TO RELEARN THE STRATEGY.
1.
Disconnect battery ground cable.
2.
Remove radio. Refer to the 1998 Ranger Workshop Manual, Section 415-00.
3.
Remove radio bezel.
4.
Remove retaining screw.
5.
Slide GEM toward the front of the vehicle, off retaining tabs.
6.
Disconnect electrical connectors.
7.
Install revised GEM. Refer to Parts Block at end of this article for correct GEM usage.
8.
Reverse Steps 1-6 and torque retaining screw to 2.3-3.3 N.m (20.4-29.2 lb-in).
9.
Connect the New Generation Star (NGS) Tester to vehicle.
10.
Program the GEM to the attributes of the vehicle. Obtain and insert into NGS Tester the Next Generation Service Pin Card (colored green,
Version 1.0 or later).
11.
Select GEM, tire size, axle ratio, options (4WABS or RABS), and then select application (Ranger).
12.
Disconnect NGS Tester when complete.
