ANTI THEFT ALARM SYSTEM - ALARM SOUNDS
INADVERTENTLY DUE TO HOOD SWITCH SETTING
LIGHT TRUCK:
1998 RANGER
ISSUE:
The anti-theft alarm may activate inadvertently on some vehicles. This may be caused by the plunger on the alarm hood switch either traveling too short
or too far.
ACTION:
Adjust the alarm hood switch bracket or remove the rubber boot over the hood switch plunger. Refer to the following Service Procedure for details.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1.
Check the Remote Anti-theft Personality (RAP) system to determine what caused the alarm to go off the last few times. Check the Parameter
Identifier (PID) with New Generation Star (NGS) Tester. The last eight events to cause the alarm to sound are stored in AL_EVT1 through
AL_EVT8 where AL_EVT1 is the last event that caused the alarm to sound.

If the NGS Tester reveals the hood switch is the cause of the alarm to sound, determine if the hood switch is traveling to much or not enough. If
the hood switch travels too far, it will make contact again at the bottom of the switch travel. Use the NGS Tester to select the:
a.
Vehicle.
b.
Diagnostic Data Link.
c.
RAP Module.
d.
PID/Data Monitor and Record.
e.
Hood switch "HOOD_SW" and check to see if the hood switch is notPUN when the hood is closed and PUNCHED when the hood is open.
3.
With the hood closed, place the NGS Tester on the windshield to observe the following:

If it displays "HOOD_SW" as notPUN, push down on the hood over the area where the hood switch is located

If it changes to PUNCHED, the hood switch is too high, then remove the rubber boot found on top of the plunger
^
If pushing down on the front of the hood to slightly bow it in the area of the hood switch and the "HOOD_SW" changes to PUNCHED, the
hood switch is too low and the bracket must be bent upward to bring the switch up

If the "HOOD_SW" displays PUNCHED when the hood is closed, push down on the hood over the area where the hood switch is located. If
the display changes to notPUN, the hood switch is too low and the bracket must be bent upward to bring the switch up

If pushing on the front of the hood to slightly bow it in the area of the hood switch and the "HOOD_SW" changes to notPUN, the hood switch
is too high. Remove the rubber boot found on top of the plunger
If the hood switch is suspect, use NGS Tester to observe what position the hood switch is in with the hood open and closed. Close the hood to check for
a change in the hood switch when the hood is moved.
NOTE:
RECHECK THE NGS TESTER AFTER REMOVING THE HOOD SWITCH PLUNGER RUBBER BOOT OR BENDING THE BRACKET
UPWARD. IF THE RUBBER BOOT HAS BEEN REMOVED AND IT STILL REQUIRES GREATER DISTANCE, SLIGHTLY BEND THE
BRACKET DOWN. THE RUBBER BOOT MAY BE USED IN ADJUSTING FOR A CLOSER CONTACT TO THE HOOD.
