Ranger 2WD V6-177 2.9L (1989)
Camshaft: Service and Repair
1.
Disconnect battery ground cable, then drain engine oil.
2.
Remove radiator, fan and spacer, drive belt and pulley.
3.
Disconnect ignition wires from spark plugs.
4.
Remove distributor cap and wires as an assembly, then disconnect distributor wiring harness and vacuum hose.
5.
Mark relationship of distributor rotor to housing for installation reference, and remove distributor from vehicle.
6.
Remove alternator and Thermactor pump.
7.
Disconnect fuel lines, then remove fuel filter and carburetor, if applicable.
8.
Remove intake manifold.
9.
Remove rocker arm covers and rocker arm shafts.
10.
Remove pushrods in order so they can be installed in their original positions.
11.
Remove valve tappets, then the oil pan.
12.
Remove crankshaft damper, then the engine front cover and water pump as an assembly.
13.
Remove camshaft gear or sprocket attaching bolt, then the gear and chain, if applicable.
14.
Remove camshaft thrust plate, then carefully slide camshaft out of engine block.
15.
Reverse procedure to install.
