Accumulator HVAC: Service and Repair
The accumulator/dryer must be replaced any time the system has been left open for more than 24 hours with the system completely
discharged, there is evidence of moisture in the system, the system is badly contaminated, there is more than five ounces of compressor oil in it,
or the accumulator/dryer is restricted, plugged or perforated. Replacement of a refrigerant line or a major component (condenser, evaporator
or seized compressor) requires replacement of the accumulator/drier. The receiver/dryer does not necessarily need to be replaced every time
there is a loss of refrigerant charge, a component is replaced or the outer shell of the unit is dented.
1.
Disconnect battery ground cable.
2.
Discharge refrigerant from system.
3.
Disconnect electrical connector from pressure switch and remove switch from accumulator.
4.
Disconnect suction hose from accumulator and cap hose.
5.
Loosen fitting connecting accumulator to evaporator core.
6.
Remove lower forward screw holding flanges of case and bracket together, and remove screw holding evaporator inlet tube to the accumulator
bracket. Disconnect accumulator from evaporator core, then remove bracket from accumulator/dryer.
7.
Reverse procedure to install. Use new O-rings lubricated with refrigerant oil.
8.
Leak test, evacuate and charge system. Check system for proper operation.
