Ranger 2WD V6-182 3.0L (1995)
Diagnostic Notes
As in all microprocessor systems, communications must be provided to monitor system operation and to allow diagnosis of any concerns that may
develop in the system. Diagnosis communication is provided through the ISO 9141 Data Link Connector (DLC) and the Rotunda New Generation Star
(NGS) Tester 007-00500 or equivalent.
GEM Module Testing Note (Start Here)
The Generic Electronic Module controls multiple electronic systems. When testing the GEM system for Diagnostic Trouble Codes, it is important to note
that it may be necessary to refer to the system(s) described by the DTC(s) within the Diagnostic Trouble Code Chart.
EXAMPLE:
While testing for Diagnostic Trouble Codes, a code B1466 is output from the GEM module. The Diagnostic Trouble Code Chart shows a description
of "Wiper Speed Not Switching". It will be necessary to refer to Wiper and Washer Systems in order to properly diagnose and repair this concern.
Functional Tests
Active Test Modes
In addition to retrieving DTCs, the GEM can also be commanded to turn on lamps, relays or solenoids. This eliminates the need to perform more
traditional pinpoint tests and speeds up repair times. The following active mode tests are available.
Front Windshield Wipers
The NGS Tester can command the GEM to turn on or to turn off the:
-
speed relay
-
wiper relay
-
washer relay
Warning Lamps and Chimes
The NGS Tester can command the GEM to turn on or to turn off the:
-
door ajar lamp
-
seat belt lamp
-
chime
Battery Saver/Illuminated Entry
The NGS Tester can command the GEM to turn on or to turn off the:
-
battery saver relay
-
illuminated entry relay
Rear Window Defrost
The NGS Tester can command the GEM to turn on or to turn off the rear window defrost relay. When the relay is energized, the lighted rear
window defrost switch illuminates.
One-Touch Window/Accessory Delay
The NGS Tester can command the GEM to turn on or to turn off the:
-
driver side window relay
-
accessory delay relay
Automatic Ride Control (ARC)
The NGS Tester can command the ARC to turn on or to turn off the:
-
Automatic ride control compressor
-
Inputs and outputs of the ARC system.
