Camshaft: Service and Repair

REMOVAL AND INSTALLATION

1. Disconnect battery ground cable.
2. Rotate crankshaft to set No. 1 piston 0 degrees at TDC on compression stroke.
3. Remove radiator.
4. Recover A/C refrigerant and remove A/C condenser core.
5. Remove engine front cover and timing chain and sprockets.
6. Remove intake manifold and valve covers.
7. Loosen rocker arm bolts enough to allow rocker arms to be lifted off pushrod and rotated to one side.
8. Remove pushrods. Identify each pushrod's location as they must be installed in their original positions during reassembly.
9. Loosen roller tappet guide plate retainer bolts and remove tappet guide plate and retainer from tappet valley.

10. Remove valve tappet guide plates from valve tappets by lifting straight up.
11. Remove valve tappets by grasping each valve tappet and pulling in line with bore.
12. Remove two camshaft thrust plate retaining bolts and camshaft thrust plate.
13. Remove camshaft by slowly pulling toward front of engine.
14. Reverse procedure to install noting the following:

a. Lightly oil all bolt and stud threads before installing except those specified for special sealant.
b. Clean all mating surfaces thoroughly.
c. Inspect camshaft bearings for wear.
d. Clean and inspect all components before installing.
