CALIBRATIONS IS UNAUTHORIZED AND COULD CREATE LIABILITY UNDER APPLICABLE FEDERAL OR LOCAL LAWS.
ISSUE:
An objectionable exhaust sulfur odor may be experienced during various driving conditions. This may be caused by the operating strategy of the EEC IV
processor or by the catalytic converter, depending on the particular application.
ACTION:
Use the following procedure to determine if a new EEC IV processor or a new catalytic converter is required. Vehicles previously serviced by TSB
93-3-17 may already have had the processor changed.
1.
Perform the diagnostic procedure in the 1993 Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis Service Manual, Page 2A-73. Service as required.
2.
If the vehicle is a 1991-1992 Explorer with automatic transmission and the sulfur odor still exists:
a.
Verify the processor part number. If not already updated, install a new EEC IV processor. Refer to the EEC IV Processor Application Chart
contained in this TSB article for correct parts usage.
NOTE:
THE BAP SENSOR IS NOT REQUIRED WITH THE NEW POWERTRAIN CONTROL MODULE BUT MAY REMAIN CONNECTED WITHOUT
INTERFERENCE.
b.
For 1991 models only, in addition to the standard entries on the Authorized Modifications Decal, write in the following instructions: "USE
1992 POWERTRAIN CONTROL/EMISSION DIAGNOSIS SERVICE MANUAL".
3.
If the vehicle is:
a.
a 1991-1992 Explorer with manual transmission,
b.
a 1993 California Ranger/Explorer (automatic or manual transmission), or
