LIGHT TRUCK:

This TSB is being republished in its entirety to include additional actions for 1990 model year trucks.
ISSUE:
A fuel line "knocking" noise, which sounds like a bearing/piston noise, may occur. This noise is more audible at lower ambient temperatures - below 45~
(7~ C). This noise is caused by hydraulic pulsations in the fuel line.
ACTION:
Install a new fuel line assembly (F2TZ-9J338-M). Refer to the following procedure for service details. This repair applies to 1990-92 Rangers, 1991-92
Explorers and 1990-92 Aerostars built before 12-1-91.
1.
Confirm that the vehicle has a fuel system knocking concern.
a.
Operate the engine at idle.
b.
Place a mechanic's stethoscope on the fuel supply line in the engine compartment to verify that the knocking source is in the fuel line.
c.
If a fuel line knocking noise is diagnosed, proceed to Step 2.

COMPONENTS.

Remove the fuel supply manifold. Refer to the appropriate Light Truck Service Manual, Section 03-04D, for fuel supply manifold assembly
removal procedure.
3.
Locate the engine/chassis fuel line couplings in the engine compartment.
a.
Remove the fuel line safety clips. Refer to the 1991 Aerostar, Explorer, Ranger Truck Service Manual, Page 10-01-10, for removal
information.
b.
Disconnect the fuel line spring lock connectors.
