This TSB article is being republished in its entirety to note that the wheel bearing retaining nut is included with the front automatic locking hub
assembly.
ISSUE:
Engagement of the front driveline on 4x4 models of the subject vehicles with Shift-On-The-Fly and Dana 35 axles may exhibit delayed or no
coupling of the front wheels. Both of these conditions may result in a hublock ratcheting noise and sometimes may result in structural
damage to the hublock. These concerns are caused by the failure of the transfer case to provide synchronization of the drivetrain during cold
weather.
ACTION:
Test drive the vehicle to determine if the driveline exhibits delayed or no coupling of the front wheels. If so, use the following procedure to
service the vehicle.
NOTE:
THESE ACTIONS SHOULD PROVIDE SHIFT-ON-FLY CAPABILITY TO 55 MPH (89 KM/H) AT TEMPERATURES ABOVE 32~F
(0~C) AND 45 MPH (72 KM/H) WITH TEMPERATURES FROM 32~F (0~C) TO AS LOW AS -20~F (-29~C).
FRONT AUTOMATIC LOCKING HUB
1.
Remove the left and right front automatic locking hubs and camming assemblies and replace with new assemblies (FOTZ-3B396-B). Refer to the
appropriate Light Truck Shop Manual, Section 04-01D, for service details.
2.
Inspect the wheel bearing retaining nut for damage and presence of foreign material which would diminish wheel bearing life.
3.
Replace the wheel bearing retaining nut if damaged. This nut is included with the front automatic locking hub assembly.
FRONT AXLE LUBRICANT
1.
Determine if the vehicle was built prior to 12/15/90.
2.
If the vehicle was built prior to 12/15/90, replace the front axle lubricant with new lubricant (F1TZ-19580-A).
a.
Extract the old lubricant using a suction gun.
NOTE:
BREAKING THE CARRIER SEAL IS NOT A RECOMMENDED METHOD OF EXTRACTING THE LUBRICANT.
b.
Refill the front axle with 56 ounces of lubricant (F1TZ-19580-A) using a suction gun.
TRANSFER CASE
1.
Remove the following old transfer case parts and replace them with the following new parts. Refer to the appropriate Light Truck Shop Manual,
Section 07-07E, for service details.
