Coolant: Description and Operation
APPROVED COOLANT AND CONCENTRATION
The approved coolant for Ford vehicles is a 50/50 mixture of Ford Premium Cooling System Fluid E2FZ-19549-AA or B or equivalent meeting Ford
specification ESE-M97B44-A and water.
This Coolant Mixture:

Provides antifreeze protection down to -37.2° C (-85° F)

Provides protection against boilover to a system temperature of 120° C (250 ° F). Too high a concentration of antifreeze, while allowable in
extremely cold climates, may cause overheating in hot weather; antifreeze cannot absorb and reject heat as well as water. On the other hand,
water has a lower boiling point than antifreeze.

Provides corrosion protection, as coolant meeting Ford specification ESE-M97B44-A contains additives to fight scale and corrosion.
^
Provides proper water pump lubrication. Too high a concentration of water may cause water pump failure.
The acceptable concentration ratios for all climates are: minimum 45% antifreeze to 55% water; maximum 60% antifreeze to 40% water.
Use only a hand-held refractometer such as Rotunda Battery/Antifreeze Tester 014-R1060 or equivalent to verify coolant concentration.
Ordinary tap water may be used for a brief time unless the water is known to be exceptionally hard or high in alkali content. As soon as possible, the
system should be drained and flushed and the proper mixture of water and Ford Premium Cooling System Fluid E2FZ- 19549-AA or B or equivalent
meeting Ford specification ESE-M97B44-A installed.
RECYCLED COOLANT
Ford Motor Company expressly authorizes the Ford Rotunda engine coolant recycling process and chemicals. Use only Ford Rotunda recycled engine
coolant or an equivalent non-Ford Rotunda recycled engine coolant that is certified by the supplier to meet Ford specification ESE-M97B44-A.
UNSATISFACTORY COOLANT MATERIALS
The following are not authorized for use in Ford vehicles:

Alcohol-type antifreeze. Alcohol-type antifreeze does not provide adequate water pump lubrication and, having a lower boiling point than
water, boils off, reducing antifreeze protection.

Alkali or brine solutions or water containing a high alkali content. These solutions will cause serious engine and cooling system damage,
especially in systems containing aluminum radiators cylinder heads or other components.
COOLANT DISPOSAL
WARNING: ANTIFREEZE IS TOXIC TO SMALL CHILDREN AND ANIMALS AND ITS SWEET FLAVOR MAKES IT ATTRACTIVE
TO THEM.
When disposing of used coolant, always do so in accordance with all applicable federal, state, and local laws and regulations.
Except for the coolant temperature gauge and water temperature indicator sender unit and the engine coolant temperature sensor (ECT sensor), there
are no electrical components in the cooling system.
