Camshaft Position Sensor: Description and Operation

Typical Hall-Effect Sensor

PURPOSE

The Camshaft Position (CMP) sensor detects the position of the camshaft when piston number one is at a specific top dead center point of its
compression stroke.

OPERATION

The hall effect device signal supplied to the Powertrain Control Module (PCM), is used for synchronization of sequential fuel injector firing.

CONSTRUCTION

The CMP sensor is a single hall effect magnetic switch, which is activated by a single vane driven by the camshaft.
